SPOILER WARNING: Today's Wordle answer and hints are below, so don't read on if you don't want to see them.
• Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
• The first letter in today's Wordle answer is P.
P is a very common first letter among Wordle answers. It's the fifth most common in the alphabet and begins 141 solutions in total.
• There are no repeated letters in today's Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.
• The last letter in today's Wordle is Y.
Y is the second most common ending letter in the game, behind only E. In total, 364 Wordle answers end with a Y.

Today's Wordle answer (game #1414) is… PATSY.
I'm kind of surprised to see PATSY appear as Wordle answer. It's really not a common word, is it? I mean when did you last use it? In fact, I'm not sure I've ever used it.
The similarly spelled PASTY, on the other hand, is a different matter. I've used that regularly, mainly because I love to eat a Cornish pasty (or the vegetarian equivalent these days); if you're not in the UK and don't know what one is, then look it up. Then find one and eat one.
Anyway, I figured that PATSY is an uncommon word, so looked it up on the genius WordAndPhraseInfo website, which ranks words according to how often they are used in the English language.
And in this regard, it ranks way down at 22,955th – far below the likes of WHOSE (527), ADEPT (10,463), BLISS (12,301) and DUMMY (11,581). It is, however, much more common than IDLER (42,117) – which again backs up my feeling that that was a very, very tough Wordle (which I don't think anyone disagrees with).
How difficult is PATSY? Well, I didn't find it that hard and the current average score of 3.8 implies that not many other people did either. It's a classic middling Wordle.
All five letters are either common overall or common in their specific positions (or both), and there are no repeats to worry about. There are, however, several similarly spelled alternatives (not counting my favorite PASTY) in the form of NASTY, HASTY and TASTY. You could also have had PATTY or PASTA if you wanted to stay on a culinary theme with PASTY.
WordleBot scored a four, and it was PASTA that cost it a three. However my game developed in a different way, and it was S-starting words that I needed to contend with.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. I began with MANIC, which gave me a green A and ruled out all but 226 words. That was a little behind WordleBot's CRANE (187) but a long way off the excellent start enjoyed by players of STARE (12), SLATE and ARISE (both 7).
I got lucky with my second word. I wanted to guard against it being an ER word, so played LOSER; maybe I was hoping to tempt fate, too. It didn't look to have worked, in that it only gave me a yellow S, but remarkably that left only four words.
These were SAGGY, SAPPY, SAVVY and PATSY, and I found them all. But I also came up with TAPAS, which for some reason is not on the 'Bot's list. I have no idea why; maybe because it's technically a plural? But it's also now used as a collective noun in English, so I'm not sure it should have been omitted. Anyway, it wasn't the answer so maybe it doesn't matter.
Playing PATSY couldn't have guaranteed me the answer in four, but at worst it might have left a 50/50 between SAVVY and SAGGY, and obviously there was a chance it might give me a three.
So I took the risk, and was rewarded for my uncharacteristic abandon: all five letters turned green and I scored another 3/6.

W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, with means that it ranks 13th – so right in the middle of the alphabet.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That's one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1413) was… WHOSE.
Phew! I was back on form, and thank heavens for that. After a run of three fives and two fours I was desperately in need of a three, and WHOSE was a nice, obliging word to turn up.
Not that everyone is finding it easy; it has an average score of 3.9, which is about standard for the game but nowhere near as low as Thursday's ADEPT, which finished at 3.5.
Letter wise, too, it's harder than ADEPT; O, S and E are very common of course, but S is not in its most likely position at the start of a word.
W and H, meanwhile, are both in the bottom half of the frequency table; H is 14th overall and W is 21st.
Together, at the start of a word, they are more common – the WH pairing is 46th and occurs 18 times among the original 2,309 solutions. That may not sound too high, but there are 215 opening combos overall, so it's firmly in the top 25%.
My game began with an average first guess, HABIT, which left 101 solutions. But it gave me a yellow H, and I got lucky when it came to placing it in my second attempt.
There are three letters an H typically goes with – S, T and C. Playing CHOSE enabled me to cover two of those – the T was already ruled out – while also including a couple of very common vowels.
And it was incredibly lucky, giving me four green letters in the format -HOSE. There was only one word left, WHOSE, so I was able to play that next for my three.

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.
We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.

One of the key things about Wordle is that everyone gets the same answer each day. Or is it? There have been four occasions when the game has served up two different solutions, causing no end of consternation among players.
The first two were victims of the New York Times' purchase of the game in February 2022. The NYT removed around a dozen words that it decided were too difficult for players, or that were in some way controversial.
However, at that time people could play either via the NYT's games site, or via the original Wordle website created by Josh Wardle. And unfortunately, the changes made by the NYT didn't always filter through correctly to the original version.
The result was that on February 15, 2022 some people got AROMA and some the much harder AGORA for puzzle #241. Then on March 30, the same thing happened with STOVE and HARRY for game #284; the NYT thought people would only consider HARRY to be a name, and not a verb (as in to harrass), so it removed it.
The problem reoccurred in May 2022. On May 10 (game #324), the NYT removed the word FETUS in the wake of the US Supreme Court's decision to repeal Roe vs Wade, deeming it too controversial. Instead, most players got SHINE. The next day, some players got GECKO while others received BUTCH, due to the NYT's servers not yet having reset for everyone from the previous day's change.
